Invisible people don't get promoted

Hi Reader,

In a recent coaching call with a VP of Data, I asked them one question:

If I asked your CTO to name one big win they'd attribute to you – what would they say?

Their answer:

I don't think they'd be able to give you any

This is a high performing VP with an incredible track record, and are recognised as subject matter expert of their business.
That's not unusual. I hear some version of this at every level.

Careers stall, and it's rarely because:

  • The work isn't good
  • The person isn't talented
  • They aren't working hard enough

It's because the people making decisions about them can't describe what they've done.

Promotions, headcount, the projects worth having – those get decided in rooms you're not in, by people working from whatever impression of you they already hold. If you haven't shaped that impression, someone else's version of you is doing the talking.

This isn't about bragging. It's about making your work legible to people who don't see it up close.

I've explained this in more detail in this 8-minute video πŸ‘‡

Where you are in your career today is largely the result of decisions you made years ago.And the decisions you make today will shape where you end up 5–10 years from now. The...

Why Your Data Career Is Stuck (And How to Fix It)

Hi Reader, Changing roles can cost you more than you realise. I regularly meet people whose careers look like this:Data Analyst β†’ Data Engineer β†’ Data Scientist β†’ Product Manager Every move may have made sense at the time. But together, they created a problem: each change forced them to partially start again. They had to: Learn new skills Rebuild their credibility Compete with people who had spent years developing expertise in that field Compare that with someone whose career looks like...
